What do I need to know about Brexit implications if I’m a British visitor or resident in Spain?

Brexit has created some changes for British nationals, but the impact varies significantly depending on whether you’re a resident or visitor to Spain.

For Residents: If you live in Spain permanently, you must register as a resident and exchange any old A4 green residency papers for the new TIE (Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero). The process requires your old residency paper, valid passport, current Empadronamiento (municipal registration), photos, completed Form EX23, and €12 payment per application. Using a gestoría (administrative agency) simplifies the process considerably.

For Visitors: If you spend less than 90 days in Spain within any 180-day period, you can continue enjoying holidays as before with minimal changes. You’ll need at least 6 months’ validity on your passport and must use the non-EU immigration queue at airports.

By the end of 2022, visitors may need to apply for an ETIAS visa waiver – a simple online application allowing entry to the Schengen Area. The same 90-day rule applies to second home owners who visit Spain for short periods.
