Madama Butterfly
UpcomingPuccini’s “Madama Butterfly” Comes to Estepona
The Felipe VI Theatre presents Puccini’s beloved opera Madama Butterfly on 28 October at 20:00.
Composed by Giacomo Puccini with a libretto by Giuseppe Giacosa and Luigi Illica, based on works by Luther Long and David Belasco, this three-act opera unfolds in early twentieth-century Nagasaki.
The story follows Cio-Cio-San, known as Madama Butterfly, who marries an American naval officer, Pinkerton, and is subsequently disowned by her own family for wedding a foreigner. While she waits faithfully for a lifelong love, Pinkerton treats the marriage as little more than a passing affair abroad, eventually returning to the United States to start a new life, leaving her pregnant in Japan. Years later, he comes back with his American wife to claim their son and take him to the US. Left with nothing and no one, Madama Butterfly chooses to take her own life by ritual suicide, believing that dying with honour is preferable to living in disgrace.
